Golf: Reigning champions Glen relegated from top league

LAST year’s winners Glen have been relegated from the East Lothian Winter League after a disastrous season.While it’s hotting up in the title race with four teams still in the hunt, it’s proved a season to forget for the defending champions.

A 3-2 defeat at Gullane in their latest outing has left Glen with just one point from eight games, meaning that relegation is now a mathematical certainty.

And they could be joined in Division Two next season by Haddington after they lost at Longniddry who are still at the top of the table but have Tantallon, Gullane and Musselburgh hanging on to their coat-tails.

After losing the top tie on the final green, Longniddry bounced back with solid wins in the next two before veteran Gus Wilson teamed up with Martin Devine in the anchor match to secure the winning point for the home team.

The defeat leaves Haddington three points from safety with just two matches remaining.

Musselburgh have catapulted themselves into title contention after back-to-back home wins over Gullane and Tantallon.

The latter was a blow for Tantallon, who now need to bounce back with at home to Haddington on Sunday week and hope that results elsewhere go their way.

Meanwhile, Royal Musselburgh will be back in the top flight next season after securing promotion with a home win over Craigielaw.

North Berwick look set to join them after Gordon Milligan’s team came out on top in a crunch match with third- placed Dunbar.

This weekend sees the Cup quarter-finals, with Kilspindie at home to Whitekirk, Gullane entertaining North Berwick, Royal Musselburgh facing a derby clash with Thorntree and Musselburgh travelling to Haddington.
