Golf: Seniors show young guns how it’s done

SENIOR stars George Wither and Andrew Oldcorn upstaged the young guns in yesterday’s Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance event at a frosty Dalmahoy.

Lothianburn man Wither took the Professional’s Trophy, the overall prize, with a net 66 off two over the West Course at the Kirknewton venue. He pipped Oldcorn on a countback after the former PGA champion from Kings Acre shot the same score with matching halves of 33.

As consolation, Oldcorn claimed the scratch spoils, beating Glencorse’s Sean McGarvey by a shot, with Mark Kerr (Dalmahoy) and Steve Mackie (Duke’s) two shots further back.

Second place behind Wither on the handicap list was shared by three players – Duddingston duo Hinton Bootland and Iain Stavert as well as Glyn Stevens (Kings Acre).

Top senior was Falkirk Tryst’s Willie Miller with a net 68 off ten. Heading into the final event before the Festive break – at Dunbar next Wednesday – Andrew Erskine (Ratho Park) and Danny Airens (Falkirk Tryst) lead the scratch and handicap orders of merit respectively.
