Dream day at Scottish Open teed up for "everyday heroes" of Covid-19 pandemic

Two local golfers to play with pros in week of European Tour event in East Lothian

Golf-loving key workers and everyday heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic in Edinburgh and the Lothians have been teed up for a dream day at next month's Scottish Open.

Through an exciting new initiative launched by the European Tour, two local golfers will play with pros in the week of the rescheduled $7 million Aberdeen Standard Investments-sponsored event at The Renaissance Club.

#Medals4Heroes, a mini-medal competition, is part of the tour’s Golf for Good initiative, which has raised close to €900,000 for local, national and international charities.

A nomination process is now open, with applicants being asked to submit up to 150 words describing the positive contribution their nominee has made to their community or the lives of others during the coronavirus.

A panel including representatives from the European Tour and Aberdeen Standard Investments will select two worthy winners.

They will tee it up alongside two European Tour pros in a mini-medal match, going head-to-head on Tuesday of the ASI Scottish Open tournament week.

Both winners will be subject to the stringent safety and testing protocols set out in the European Tour’s comprehensive health strategy.

An alternative virtual prize will also be offered to any winner who cannot attend in person.

As part of the wider Golf for Good initiative at the Rolex Series event, SAMH - Scotland’s national mental health charity - has been confirmed as the official tournament charity.

In addition, Trussell Trust, which supports a nationwide network of foodbanks to provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, will be a charity partner.

All European Tour tournaments for the remainder of the 2020 season, will be underpinned by the Golf for Good initiative which aims to give back in three key areas:

▪ supporting the communities where the European Tour plays;

▪ rewarding true heroes, such as front-line workers; and

▪ promoting the many health benefits that golf offers.

In the eight weeks since Golf for Good launched at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood at Close House near Newcastle, €872,819 has been raised for local, national and international charities.
