Kieran Cantley landed his first big win as an amateur at Royal Dornoch - and the Edinburgh man has now repeated the feat as a professional.

His breakthrough success in the paid ranks came in a play-off against Paul O’Hara in the Royal Dornoch Masters on the Tartan Pro Tour.

In windy conditions, Cantley followed an opening 66 at the Sutherland venue with a 68 to finish on six-under, which was matched by O’Hara after exactly the same efforts.

The pair halved the first two holes in a sudden-death shoot-out before Cantley claimed a £4,000 top prize by winning the 18th with a par-4.

“It means a lot,” said Cantley of his success on the circuit set up by Paul Lawrie last year for home-based players.

“My first win as an amateur was in the North of Scotland at Dornoch and I was hoping that was a wee omen heading into the play-off.

“It’s really good to win and hopefully I can kick on from this, which is definitely a confidence boost.”

It was the second time in three events that O’Hara had ended up as bridesmaid, having also finished second to Gavin Hay in the Montrose Links Masters earlier in the month.

Overnight leader and defending champion Chris Maclean (71) finished third on four-under, one ahead of Hay (66) and Jack McDonald (69).

Neil Fenwick, last season’s No 1, tied for sixth with Sean Lawrie on two-under, with Barassie Links Masters winner Sam Locke and tour founder Lawrie in a group on level-par.
