Richie Ramsay has paid a heart-warming tribute to key workers for their efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic ahead of big-time golf making its return in the UK.

The Aberdonian delivered his message in a post on Twitter as he prepared for the Betfred British Masters at Close House, near Newcastle.

"To everyone of those essential and key workers who, when we were on lockdown, were going in to work under immense pressure with Covid and maybe didn't get to see their family for a long time, I just want to say thank you," said Ramsay.

Talking about golf, the three-time European Tour winner added: "We effectively chase a ball around a field. You guys save lives - there's a big difference."

This week's event in Northumberland marks the European Tour's full restart after being shutdown in early March due to the pandemic.

A £2 million-plus health strategy has been drawn up to get the circuit up and running, with a Scottish doctor, Andrew Murray, leading the team delivering that for the rest of the year.

"It's been a fantastic effort by the whole of the European Tour to put it together," added Ramsay. "Particular praise goes out to Andy Murray for helping design the protocols that have been put in place.

"They are strict and robust and really help us stay safe and allow us to continue playing golf."
