SIX-year-old Fraser aims for glory at ST ANDREWS

Despite having not long started attending primary school, a young golfer who took to the sport as soon as he could walk is about to compete at the home of golf.

Six year old golfer Fraser Walters, who will compete in the UK and Ireland golf championships at St Andrews at the end of the month.

Six-year-old Fraser Walters from Eskbank will compete in the UK and Ireland Golf Championships at St Andrews Old Course (under-7 category) on August 27 and 28 after coming through two qualifying competitions.

Dad Steven Walters revealed that the Loretto Primary School pupil developed his love for the game at a very young age.

Steven said: “He started playing when he was about one and a half or two.

“He plays golf literally every day at every chance he gets.

“He is a member at Craigielaw Golf Club, but he also goes to King’s Acre Driving Range quite a lot.

“I used to be a big golfer when I was younger but I don’t play at all now, other than when I’m with Fraser, of course.

“He has always liked golf, but in the past year or 18 months he has pretty much played golf every day. It is his life now.

“He got plastic golf clubs for Christmas when he was one and a half and his love for it just stuck from then.”

Hundreds of golfers of Fraser’s age entered the competition, which started earlier this year. Steven explained how his son made it through to the final 24 at St Andrews at the end of the month.

He said: “There was a local qualifier in North Berwick back in April, which he won.

“Then there was a regional qualifier at Carnoustie after that, in which he came second.

“Three went through from that. There were eight regional qualifiers so there will be 24 golfers in Fraser’s age category at St Andrews.

“One of the kids from down south whom he will play against just recently finished fourth in the World Championships. This shows how tough it will be for Fraser but if he gets top five that would be great. I don’t think he will be far away from the top. He is very good and has won golf competitions with his school, so I guess he has as much chance as anybody else.

“He has a handicap of eight at Craigielaw Golf Club’s six-hole kids’ course.

“I think there are five or six family and friends going up to cheer him on. It should be a great weekend.”

Craigielaw Golf Club manager Derek Scott is delighted one of the Aberlady club’s youngest members is doing so well. He said: “Golf should be a game for all ages and we are really delighted to see that Fraser has entered and is playing in the UK & Ireland Championships under-7 section and hope he enjoys his experience.

“Having worked hard on his game at Craigielaw we are confident he will play well.”
