Sam Judge scored the only goal as the students edged Northern Irish side Ulster Elks to move to the top of their qualifying pool yesterday.

Her goal after nine minutes was an ideal start and the Scots held their nerve to secure a game against Russian side HC Donchanka today.

Coach Graham Moodie said: “The win takes us into the final which is great. We are pleased with the win and even more pleased with the performance.

“It was a great goal from Sam and an excellent team performance, especially defensively. Ulster Elks are a very good side and it was a tough.”

The students, who opened with a 3-0 win over Swansea City on Friday, suffered a 1-0 defeat to hosts SK Slavia Prague in their second game on Saturday, leaving them third in the pool.

In Lille, France, Edinburgh-based Leigh Fawcett netted the final goal as Dundee’s Grove Menzieshill powered to a 6-1 victory against Swiss side Black Boys HC from Geneva in the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge II.

Grove finished second in Pool A and now play Belgian side Waterloo Ducks, who won Pool B with an unblemished three-game record, in their final game today.
