Hockey: Three titles in a row for Inverleith

The Capital combine were crowned Scottish champions for the third year in a row with a 5-4 win.

Dan Coultas claimed a glory treble and his fellow Scottish indoor internationalist Gordon Amour a double.

The Tayside team were ahead 2-1 after 24 minutes and level at 3-3 five minutes later.

But Coultas converted a penalty corner and Amour lifted the ball over Andy Ross to make it 5-3 and, despite a late counter from Chris Wilson, the Edinburgh side held on.

Stuart Neave, Inverleith’s coach, said: “We targeted getting to the final and also winning the event as we want to be in Europe next year. Naturally, we’re happy as we have achieved what we set out to do.”

Inverleith travel to Russia for the EuroHockey Indoor Club Champions Trophy in Pavlovskii Posad from February 12-14.

Grange were edged out of third place in Division One when they lost a penalty shoot-out to Uddingston Riva at Perth.

The sides were level at 1-1 after goals from Grange’s coach Callum Milne in 19 minutes and a reply from Barry Platt after 32 minutes but the Lanarkshire side won the penalty shootout 2-0.

Edinburgh University men won promotion to Division Two after coming from behind to beat Dundee-based Harris FP 2-0 in a penalty shoot-out.

The Capital combine were 1-0 down but led 3-2 thanks to a double from Antonis Efthymiou until Albert Rowling levelled with a hat-trick goal with three minutes left of normal time.

Glasgow-based Western Wildcats retained their Division One status indoors with a 5-1 victory over Division Two side Alpha Data Carnegie.

Earlier, Dunfermline-based Carnegie had earned a chance of promotion via the play-final by edging Edinburgh side Watsonians 4-3 with Jarrod Bass netting the winner in the final seconds.
