Holligan in line to carry flag at Games

Firrhill HIGH SCHOOL sixth-year pupil Tom Holligan (Edinburgh AC) is in line to carry the flag for Scotland in the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Youth Games, beginning in the Isle of Man on Friday.

The 17-year-old European Youth Olympics 200 metres gold medallist is one of three members of the 50-strong team, who leave today, short-listed for the honour.

The others are Livingston swimmer Craig Benson, who took a silver medal in the 100m breast stroke at the European Junior Championships, and Peebles cyclist Grant Ferguson, who was a silver medallist at the European Mountain Bike Cross Country Championships.

The three were nominated by their sports and voted on by their fellow competitors at the recent team camp – the decision will be announced on Thursday.
