James Heatly wins his second European Games medal

Heatly, who won bronze in the men’s 1m springboard on Thursday, dived with Ross Haslam.

The pair started slowly, scoring 48 with their back dive but soon picked up the pace with 51.6 for their inward 1½ somersault and 56.7 for a forward 2½ somersault with one twist. An impressive forward 3½ somersault earned them 71.61 with their fourth dive and they sealed silver with 58.14 after a forward 2½ somersault with two twists.

That left the Brits on 286.05 and, while they held off the challenge from German duo Frithjof Seidel and Nico Herzog in third, they could do nothing to trouble the imperious Russian pairing of Ilia Molchanov and Nikita Nikolaev who racked up 324.69 for gold.

Heatly, 18, said: “We just wanted to go out there and put in a good performance and see where that would put us because our PB is not far off what the Russians got today so if we could have matched that then who knows. But we still got a silver medal and everyone else did well so to still come out on top of them is really good. Who knows if I can get a third medal, we will see what happens but fingers crossed.”

Haslam said: “We wanted to get all of our dives and it wasn’t that way today but we have still come out of it with a silver medal so you can’t be disappointed.”
