Lewis Benson impresses in fifth pro victory

Edinburgh boxer Lewis Benson secured the fifth win of his professional career with a points victory over the previously undefeated Lithuanian Edvinas Puplauskas in Glasgow.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games star remained composed throughout the four rounds despite the Eastern European’s threat and proved the more prolific when landing his shots.

“It was a good, hard fight against a very tough opponent,” the MGM fighter said. “He wanted to keep his unbeaten record but I boxed to my coaches’ instructions and won well.

“I don’t want to hang around fighting journeymen, these are the sort of tests I need that will stand me in good stead for the future.”

Benson, 24, will be looking for his sixth win when he returns to the ring at Meadowbank on Saturday, May 7, for MGM’s Collision Course bill.

Meanwhile, newly-crowned Scottish 56kg champion Lee McGregor is through to the final of the Belgrade Winners Tournament after a first-round stoppage over German Atdhe Gashi in their semi-final clash in the Serbian Capital.

The Meadowbank amateur, 19, will now box for the gold medal tomorrow against Riccardo D’Andrea of Italy.
