Lucy Hope wins a hat-trick of medals at Edinburgh International Swim Meet

Hope, 21, won the women’s 50m backstroke on Thursday at the Royal Commonwealth Pool and backed it up with the 50m freestyle gold on Friday in a time of 25.69secs.

She will be competing for Team Scotland in Australia at the Commonwealth Games next month and was impressive over the four days.

Her University of Edinburgh team-mate, Katie Stark, picked up bronze in the 100m freestyle behind Hope last night.

On Thursday, Hope and Stark’s team-mate, Englishman David Cumberlidge, took a silver in the men’s 100m freestyle.

He is also heading to the Gold Coast and on Saturday he picked up a gold in the men’s 50m freestyle in a time of 22.28secs.

Cumberlidge said of his time in the Capital: “It has been a good few days and now training  continues for the Games.”

Kathryn Greenslade, who is part of Team Wales for the Commonwealth Games and trains in Edinburgh, posted 1:58.53secs to win the women’s 200m freestyle final on Thursday. She then won silver in the 200m backstroke on Friday.

That event was won by her club team-mate Lizzie Simmonds, who will represent England in the Gold Coast.

Simmonds then backed it up by winning the women’s 100m backstroke on Saturday.

“I am really happy with how this meet has gone, it is always nice to win medals an I am enjoying swimming with the University of Edinburgh and feel like I am making improvements as things move along,” she said.

On Thursday another University of Edinburgh athlete, Tain Bruce, broke her own Scottish record in the women’s 100m butterfly final to claim a bronze medal. And last night Corrie Scott, also of the University of Edinburgh, took a bronze medal in the women’s 50m breaststroke final. She swam a time of 31.44 to make the podium.

And in the last session, in the women’s 200m butterfly final, Heart of Midlothian’s Keanna Macinnes just missed out on a medal. In a race of real  quality Alys Thomas from Swansea won while 16-year-old Macinnes finished fourth in a time of 2:11.28.
