Matthew determined to repay Archerfield honour

CATRIONA MATTHEW reckons it would be fitting if she won the Aberdeen Scottish Ladies Open on home turf today.

The 41-year-old was made an honorary member at Archerfield Links after winning the British Women’s Open two years ago.

And she says the practice facilities at the Gullane venue have helped her keep her place among the world’s elite since then.

“The facilities here are great,” said Matthew after storming into a four-shot lead in the race for a £29,000 first prize on the back of a course-record 65 in the second round. Leading the pack chasing the North Berwick woman was American Hannah Jun, who lost her overnight lead after a 73 but remained hopeful she could still land the title.

“I have never played with Catriona before,” said the 26-year-old Californian. “She’s accomplished a lot but I will just go out and enjoy it.

“Whatever happens, I will learn something from the experience, so it should be fun.”

While Matthew looked to have one hand on the top cheque, Musselburgh’s Vikki Laing also looked to be set for a decent pay-day. She had a second-round 72 for 145 and was lying in a tie for 19th with fellow Scots Mhairi McKay and Kylie Walker.
