McCallum and Clancy flying high with Condor team

Lothians cyclist James McCallum had the crowd at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow on its feet when he linked up with world and Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy to land victory in the Madison and help steer the Rapha Condor JLT team to overall victory in the Revolution Series.

McCallum, whose main objectives for the season are in road racing, also showed good pace in the elimination event, where he finished third behind the German riders Nico Hesslich and Christian Grassmann.

City of Edinburgh sprinter John Paul almost matched McCallum’s achievement in making the top step on the podium. After posting the quickest time in qualifying then seeing off his team mate Bruce Croall – a late replacement for Callum Skinner, who withdrew through illness – and Craig MacLean, he was pipped on the line by American Matthew Baranoski in the final. Baranoski also got the better of his teenage rival in the Keirin, with Croall taking fifth spot.

Croall tasted success in the consolation handicap event when he saw off Dutchman Teun Mulder, but Mulder, Baranoski and Kevin Mansker signed off with a win over the Scottish trio in the international team sprint.

The meeting offered several Scottish youngsters an opportunity to sample the atmosphere of a big international meeting. City of Edinburgh riders Stuart Balfour, Matthias Barnet, Sean Noon and Emma Borthwick all acquitted themselves well in a busy programme for the Future Stars competition.
