Monarchs' teenage ace Bewley out for nine days

It is a big blow to the Capital outfit given how well Bewley has been riding of late.

The young Englishman, who stormed to an impressive ten points against the Tynesiders, came to grief in heat 11 when he took the second bend too wide and lifted, coming down with his bike and also wiping out his skipper Sam Masters.

After a lengthy delay for treatment Bewley was ferried to hospital with concussion which rules him out of action for a mandatory nine days.

Monarchs team manager Alex Harkess said today: “He was only taken to hospital because he was feeling sick afterwards and thankfully nothing was broken. He has got away lightly and while he cannot ride for the next nine days this rule was brought in to protect any riders who suffer concussion. And we appreciate that things could have been a whole lot worse for him and are just glad he will be back in action quite soon.”

Monarchs will seek a replacement for Bewley and may also have to find a guest for American star Ryan Fisher who is still suffering from a broken foot injury. Fisher rode against Glasgow Tigers last Friday against advice and was forced to miss the Newcastle trip as a consequence.

Harkess added: “Ryan is a concern especially in a double header. But he tells me he is planning to race. We certainly did not force him to ride against Glasgow even although it was felt he came back too quickly following the incident at Somerset the previous week. We will just have to wait and see how he feels.”

Skipper Masters hurt his groin when Bewley brought him down but the Aussie will be fit for his Grand Prix Challenge date in Sweden this weekend. Masters misses his side’s double header and is replaced by Newcastle’s Ludvig Lindgren.
