Motorsport: Capital’s Oli clinches title

EDINBURGH’S Oli Mortimer delivered three mature drives to clinch the Porsche GT3 Cup Championship at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.

The 27-year-old Scot, who entered the weekend with a slender three-point advantage over his nearest rivals, won the first race in his Tynecastle Garage-prepared Porsche.

And after finishing second, and scoring a point for fastest lap in the second race, Mortimer had to finish no lower than fourth in the final race of the season to seal the title.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to win such a prestigious title,” Mortimer, who finished a comfortable third in the final race, admitted. “I knew the first of the three races was pivotal, and to start from pole position and win on my first time racing on the new grand prix track at Silverstone was the perfect start. Now hopefully, having achieved so much in my first full season in sportscars, I can step up to the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship next season.”
