Munsey's 41 not enough as Scotland lose World T20 opener

Capital cricketer George Munsey scored 41 runs from 29 balls, but it was not enough as Scotland lost their World Twenty20 opener to Afghanistan in India.

The Scots will now have to defeat Zimbabwe and Hong Kong later in the week in Group B to have any hope of progressing to the Super 10 phase.

Afghanistan batted first in Nagpur and made 170-5 from their 20 overs.

Edinburgh-based bowlers Mark Watt and Ali Evans both took wickets, but 61 from just 39 balls by Mohammad Shahzad and 55 not out from Asghar Stanikzai led their side to a useful total.

In reply, Munsey and Kyle Coetzer (40) put on 84 for the first wicket and set their team’s run chase up nicely. However, three wickets were lost in quick succession and they were always up against it from 95-3.

Matt Machan did his best to salvage the match with 36 but, in the end, Scotland lost by 14 runs.
