The team survived a takeover attempt by Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer; won the League Cup for the first time since 1972; qualified for Europe; suffered relegation, and got back up at the first time of asking.

It was a time of fluorescent yellow and lurid lilac away shirts; of Calor Gas, Carlsberg, and MacBean Protective Clothing. Alex Miller, Jim Duffy, Keith Wright, Darren Jackson, and Pat McGinlay.
