Marc Warren has heaped praise on his Edinburgh-based sponsor after kick-starting his European Tour career with a weekend win.

The 39-year-old, who won the Austrian Open on Sunday for his fourth title triumph on the circuit, has been backed by Aberdeen Standard Investments since 2015.

During that time, he’s partnered Martin Gilbert, the driving force behind the company’s strong support of Scottish golf, in the Dunhill Links Championship.

They stuck by him after losing his full European Tour card two seasons ago then slipping further down the Race to Dubai rankings last year.

Warren was grateful for that and is hoping he repaid the faith shown him by landing his first victory on the circuit in just under six years.

“The support I’ve received from Aberdeen Standard Investments is incredible and you definitely appreciate it more as you go through tough times,” he admitted.

“There’s nobody better than Martin Gilbert to ask for advice. He’s not one to mess about. He’ll ask you straight up if you want to play and want to get better.

“Having someone like that who is massively respected in the business world in your corner is a huge thing.

“It’s great that I speak to Martin quite a lot and the other members of the team - Jill Maxwell and Robin Spring - as well. Even when I was playing poorly the last couple of years, they’ve been in touch asking me to do some stuff to feel as though I am still part of the team.

“The whole company top to bottom, their support for golf is incredible and long may it continue. Scottish golf, in particular, it’s scary to think where it would be without their support over the years.

“Honestly, I can’t say enough about them. I’m very lucky to have great friends and family around me, but to have a sponsors like I have is amazing.”

The former World Cup winner has also received loyal backing from Callaway, having been a staff player for nearly a decade.

“Aberdeen Standard and Callaway have always fought my corner,” he added. “Not once in speaking to either Pete Harrison at Callway and Martin Gilbert at ASI has there ever been a ny doubt about my plahying ability or what I want to do in the game.

“It’s in the tough times that you appreciate that support and I am both satisfied and proud to give them a small something back.”

Gilbert was quick to offer his congratulations on social media and told the Evening News: “I’m delighted for Marc.

“Form is temporary but class is permanent, so it is great to see him back in the winner’s circle, where he belongs. I’m so pleased that my partner from previous Dunhills is back on the tour.”

Warren met his wife Laura, an Edinburgh woman, when he played in the Craigmillar Park Open as an amateur. She was driving down to Liverpool with their son, Archie, to pick him up as he returned home yesterday.

“It will be a nice journey home,” he declared of a success that has got straight into next week’s Betfred British Masters at Close House, near Newcastle.
