Powerlifter Yule heading for Rio as part of Team GB

Scots powerlifter Micky Yule is set to make his Paralympic debut in Rio this summer after the 37-year-old was named in a four-strong British team for the Games.

The former Royal Engineer officer, who lost both of his legs when he stepped on an land mine in Helmand Province in 2010, will compete in the 65kg event in Brazil.

“I’ve dedicated myself to this sport and have worked incredibly hard to get to this point,” said Yule, who has moved from Edinburgh to Loughborough to train for the Paralympics. “To be named as a member of the team today is a great honour, and I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me to reach this point.

“The next few months are absolutely crucial and I’ll be focusing on ensuring I’m ready to go out there and perform. I’m excited to be competing on the biggest platform for powerlifting and to show people what we can do – I’m sure more world records will fall in Rio.”

The squad also includes English trio Zoe Newson, Ali Jawad and Natalie Blake.
