Rugby: Leonard on target as Muir triumph

Harry LEONARD put in a controlled performance at stand-off as Boroughmuir won the Bill McLaren Shield with a hard-fought victory over Hawick on Saturday.

The Meggetland men dogged it out 9-7 at Mansfield Park to give them their first win in RBS Premier One. It was the first game to be played for the Shield produced to remember the great commentator and ’Muir will now defend it against Stirling County this coming Saturday.

Young talent Leonard, who spent the summer in New Zealand and is involved with Edinburgh, was picked in the pivotal position ahead of the more experienced Ally Warnock and did not disappoint.

He banged over the first of three long range penalties to give the visitors the lead after just three minutes before a first period of mistakes from both sides in difficult conditions. Just before the break Leonard kicked his second penalty, this one from nearly 50 metres, and they were 6-0 up. In the second half Leonard kicked a third penalty before Hawick scored a late converted try through Keith Davies, but ’Muir held on.

Heriot’s made it two wins from two at Bridgehaugh, winger Jordy Kohn leading the way with two tries to helps see off Stirling County 29-13.

Currie on the other hand have now lost their opening two matches after going down 39-16 at Melrose.

Stewart’s Melville are second in RBS Premier Two after a 39-13 win at Peebles. Watsonians lost 41-18 at Kelso while in RBS Premier Three Haddington lost 32-7 at home to Kirkcaldy with Lasswade losing 40-15 at Dumfries.
