Rugby: Moody believes Meggetlanders can compete

Boroughmuir star Iain Moody believes his side have shown the ability to compete against any teams in Premiership rugby as they prepare to go in search of an elusive win against a British and Irish Cup qualifier for the third successive weekend.

Boroughmuir head for Ayr on Saturday on the back of a three-point home defeat by Currie which followed another tantalising loss, by a similar margin, at Melrose.

But Moody, who was controversially denied a late try when it was decided he had knocked on at the base of an attacking scrum, said of the incident. “I thought I’d scored but (if) the referee sees it differently then you can’t do much about it. We have to learn to keep our discipline a bit better and go again.

“Sides like Currie and Melrose have been beating teams by 30, 50 points. This shows we can do it against them.” Moody who, speaking on the Boroughmuir website, insisted the outcome could have gone either way.

“It was a tight one, a kicking battle. We worked hard and I thought we had set piece dominance and that kind of showed throughout the game . . . we were just unlucky towards the end.”

Defeat leaves Boroughmuir sixth but victory at Ayr could move them into a top-four place ahead of the November 5 split.
