The South African was most recently with the Blue Bulls and is well known to Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill after playing under him at French club Toulon in 2016-17.

Ferreira, 30, has signed a one-year deal and provides cover for the absent Grant Gilchrist and Fraser McKenzie who are both out with long-term injuries.

Cockerill said: “He’s a big man that has played plenty of rugby at a high level, while his work ethic and attitude are a good fit for the culture we have in place here at Edinburgh Rugby.”

Ferreira, who has also played for Cheetahs and Lions, and Italian side Zebre, said: “I’m really eager to get back playing again and make my mark in the Guinness Pro14. It’s a great competition with some brilliant players involved.

“I obviously know coach Cockerill from my time with Toulon. He really sold me on the club.”
