Edinburgh star Burleigh cited after Leinster game

Edinburgh centre Phil Burleigh has been cited for 'alleged contact with the eye area of an opponent' in the 13th minute of Friday's 30-23 loss to Leinster in Dublin.

The Irish province’s wing Fergus McFadden has also been cited for an “alleged dangerous tackle” on Edinburgh’s Damien Hoyland in the 38th minute of the same game. The thumping high tackle on the young winger looked like a red card offence but was surprisingly not even considered worthy of a yellow by referee Marius Mitrea, who simply awarded a penalty.

However, the independent citing officer believes the 29-year-old Irishman should face a disciplinary hearing along with Burleigh on a date yet to be confirmed later this week.

Edinburgh’s losing bonus point at the RDS kept them clinging on to sixth place and their battle for a top-half finish which will bring qualification to the European Champions Cup next season faces another stern test when they travel to Munster on Friday.

The Irish side are level with Edinburgh on 53 points but in seventh place on points difference.

The Welsh pair of Cardiff and Ospreys, who also play on Friday, are lurking within striking distance on 52 and 49 points.

Munster coach Anthony Foley said: “Edinburgh is massive. We are going to be tight and make sure we are going to be properly prepared, make sure we give it a big shot down in Cork and that we get a result.

“I watched Edinburgh against Leinster last Friday night at the RDS and they are a very good side, stacked with international players.

“They will be a hard side to shift, but we need to shift them. We need to make sure we are ready for that job.”
