Scotland women's rugby captain Lisa Martin insists the fact the national final is named in the memory of a fellow Murrayfield Wanderer adds extra poignancy to her clubmates as they look to win the Sarah Beaney Cup tomorrow.

Beaney was tragically killed in a car crash 11 years ago and Martin said the current set of players are fully aware of her legacy as Wanderers – aiming for their 12th trophy success – prepare to face arch-rivals Hillhead-Jordanhill on the international pitch at BT Murrayfield.

“Obviously with the cup being named after one of our players who unfortunately died in an accident it obviously has a special resonance for us,” said the 26-year-old stand-off.

“I didn’t know her but I know of her and she’s as much part of the jersey as any of us.”

For the second year running the women’s showpiece will take place just before the main BT Cup final and is a repeat of last year’s dramatic 25-22 win for the Edinburgh club.
