Scunthorpe Scorpions '˜rode under protest' against Monarchs

After losing to Edinburgh Monarchs 45-44 in their Premier League speedway clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday, Scunthorpe Scorpions have revealed they rode under protest over Edinburgh's use of Mitchell Davey as a guest replacement for regular reserve Dan Bewley who was unavailable due to his commitments with Belle Vue Colts.

Scunthorpe team manager Dave Peet said: “It was quite clear to us that Davey’s inclusion was illegal. We rode under protest regarding his eligibility, so we will see how that goes.”

Davey, who Monarchs tried to sign over the winter, scored four points from his three outings and was fully entitled to ride according to Monarchs boss John Campbell, who said: “The British Speedway Promoters Association (BSPA) issue National League Green Sheet averages which clearly indicate Mitchell was eligible to race for us. That’s what we all work from.”

Monarchs are aware of Scunthorpe’s stance, but feel any protest they may lodge will be over-ruled.

Monarchs gained three points from their triumph and moves them up to sixth place in the table on 20 points with matches in hand. They have now gained eight points from their away meetings so far and are in a good position to book their spot in the end of season play-offs.
