Snooker: MacGillivary not at his best but win is still sweet as Kandi

Craig MacGillivray has booked his place in the last 16 of the European Amateur Snooker Championship with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Denmark’s Daniel Kandi.

The Granton cueman was not at his best throughout the match, failing to record a break over 50, and MacGillivray said: “I didn’t play well and it was only my greater experience that helped me get over the line.”

MacGillivray was due to play Czech Lukas Krenek this morning for a place in the quarter-finals.

MacGillivray was joined in the last 16 by fellow Scots James McBain (Glasgow) and Scott Donaldson (Perth), who had comfortable victories, both winning 5-0 against Israelis Shay Arama and David Vaitzman respectively. McBain will now play Darren Paris (Switzerland) whilst Donaldson must defeat Antonis Poulios (Cyprus) for a place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s newest snooker pro Michael Leslie is in action tonight in the qualifying stages of the Australian Goldfields Open at the Sheffield Snooker Academy. Leslie is up against Duane Jones (Wales), with the winner facing Maltese legend Tony Drago.
