Spartans keeper Carswell makes winning Summer League debut

BLAIR CARSWELL swapped his goalkeeping gloves for a golf one to make a winning debut in the Clarity-sponsored Edinburgh Summer League.

Carswell, who is Spartans’ first-choice shot-stopper, helped Silverknowes make home advantage count with a 6-2 victory over Newbattle.

“Blair finds it difficult to get as much golf in as he would like because of his football commitments, but had a great win on his debut,” said Alex Renton of Carswell beating Craig Sturgeon 3&2.

Tom Caldwell, Keith Reilly, Murray Paterson and Kenny Alexander also won their matches as Silverknowes bounced back from an opening defeat in this year’s campaign at Longniddry.

In their second game, the East Lothian club laid down an early marker by chalking up a 4.5-3.5 win at Kingsknowe thanks to Jonny Watt holing a six-footer at the last to beat Graeme Fraser.

“We were delighted to pull off a hard-fought away win which is very difficult to achieve,” admitted Longniddry’s Alistair Robertson.

Newcomers Craigielaw also won on the road – at Dalmahoy – while Turnhouse emulated that feat at Prestonfield.
