Tennis: Mikheeva one match from milestone in Bournemouth

Edinburgh’s Anastasia Mikheeva today stands just one match away from another notable tennis milestone when she contests the AEGON British 12 and under singles final with Coventry’s Georgina Axon in Bournemouth. The Duddingston youngster, who attends the Scottish Tennis Academy based at St George’s School, had a glorious afternoon yesterday when she not only defeated the singles top seed Livvy Tomkins 6-2, 6-4 but later teamed up with Cheshire’s Eden Richardson to win the doubles crown. The pair defeated Georgina Axon and Katie Swan 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Anastasia said: “The final against Georgie will be difficult. I played her in the Winter Masters and it was a three-set battle, so I am in no doubt that it will be a great match.”

In reaching the final Anastasia first dispatched a qualifier 6-1, 6-0 then showed resilience to pull through a couple of three-setters which contrasted with her relatively comfortable win over the top seeded Tomkins.

Edinburgh’s Alexandra Hunter, last year’s ten-and-under champion, battled through three qualifiers but lost her opening tie to the sixth seed.
