Tennis: Mikheeva opens city event with success over Reimchen

Anastasia MIKHEEVA, from the Scottish tennis 
academy at St George’s School, helped set the standard for 
local hopefuls at 
Craiglockhart’s AEGON 
junior international event with
a convincing opening round victory.

Awarded the AEGON junior player of the month for March after an under-12 clay court triumph in Slovenia and successful at last week’s Scottish Junior Open, Duddingston-born Anastasia took advantage of a wildcard entry into this week’s Craiglockhart under-18 event to defeat fellow Germany’s Anastasia Reimchen 6-2, 6-4.

Joining Anastasia in the 
second round is second seed Anna Brogan, from Newlands, who beat Brigit Folland 6-2, 6-3.

Eighth seed Millie Stretton (Blackhall) is due in action today against Emily Smith while Waverley’s Alexandra Hunter in the under-14 event and is due to play the Japanese Mizuki Sakurai.

In the boys’ under-18’s 
Edinburgh hopes are 
carried by Blackhall’s Euan McIntosh, who will start today against fellow Briton Bjorn Thomson.

To book his place in the main event McIntosh won three qualifying matches without dropping a set.
