Carla Bozulich aims to provoke at Henry's

Carla is no broadsheet-friendly icon, however, but a multi-talented art-punk songwriter and firebrand musician.

All the way from Los Angeles, Carla returns to Europe, and to the Capital this evening to play Henry’s Cellar Bar.

Best known in music circles as the lyricist and founder of alt-country band The Geraldine Fibbers and Evangelista, she was also a founding member of alternative/industrial music band Ethyl Meatplow and Scarnella, with guitarist Nels Cline.

Time and again Carla has headed up bands that sound like nothing else and arguably stake out genres unto themselves: the bent agit-prop of Ethyl Meatplow; the ferocious roots-tinged epic rock of The Geraldine Fibbers; the vocal-driven sound-art of Scarnella and Evangelista; her large-scale performances including the ongoing Eyes For Ears series.

And it’s not just a passion for performing that fuels Carla’s creativity. Her credits also include scores for a Los Angeles avant-garde production of Jean Genet’s The Maids, also a highly composed score to accompany the piece, Sum, written by novelist, David Eagleman.

Her score for the award winning film, By Hook Or By Crook is book-ended with a soundtrack compilation for which she brought onboard an incredible cast of friends, including The Makeup and Low and a gritty blues composition out of the aforementioned Cline to enhance a sweltering sex scene.

So, provocateur, writer, producer, curator, interdisciplinary artist and prolific musician, if you have never heard of Carla Bozulich introduce yourself to her and her work tonight at Henry’s.

Brutally raw and weirdly visionary, she condones, “clawing your way out from underneath the band-aid doll skin stretched over our eyes and mouths”.
