For many musicians, having a song go viral on TikTok is the goal, as it almost guarantees them to be a massive hit - something that artists like Lizzo and Lil Nas X have enjoyed.
But recently, it’s not a new song that’s been taking the internet by storm.
Instead, Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 hit Dreams has experienced its biggest ever boost on streaming services thanks to a viral TikTok video.
This is what you need to know.
What was the TikTok video?
A TikTok user called Nathan Apodaca (@420doggface208) posted a video of himself on Friday 25 September, which has since gained over 5.6 million likes.
The video was set to Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and featured Apodaca on his longboarding commute to work, drinking from a bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice, and singing along to the Fleetwood Mac tune.
The clip went viral almost immediately, with users loving the video, and recreating it themselves.
“WHY IS THIS SUCH A VIBE,” one user commented on the video.
Another wrote: “This is honestly my favourite video of all time and nothing will ever change that.”
The official account from TikTok even recognised the video, commenting: “An absolute icon.”
How did the video affect Dreams sales?
Dreams, the song from the viral clip, experienced a huge boost in popularity after the video took off online.
It garnered its highest ever streaming numbers in the US and Rumours, the album that features Dreams, returned to the US Top 40 for the first time since 2013.
It also returned to the UK charts last week as well, at number 85.
Sales of the song skyrocketed by 184 per cent, and Spotify revealed that streams of Dreams on its platform has increased by 127 per cent, with a 242 per cent increase in first time listeners.
Apple also reported a spike of 221 per cent in Dreams streams, and a 1,135 per cent increase in Shazam requests.
What did Mick Fleetwood say?
Mick Fleetwood, Fleetwood Mac’s drummer, even joined TikTok to recreate the video himself, posting it on Sunday 4 October.
He captioned the video: “@420doggdace208 had it right. Dreams and Cranberry just hits different.”
Originally, the official Fleetwood Mac retweeted the video on Twitter, writing: “We love this!”
Fleetwood also surprised Apodaca during an interview with BBC World News America.
Fleetwood said: “It’s so joyous and fun and I was just led right into it, and people around me were going like ‘Dad you gotta do this, it’s so cool’ and so we did it and here we are talking and I just want to say, outside of Fleetwood Mac, we owe you.
“It’s such a great story, and so needed in days that are really challenging, and not to get into that whole thing, but I’ve heard you speaking and it makes people smile. I’m so happy to be part of it.
“Congratulations on a wild, wild skateboard journey that has led us to talking today.”
Apodaca replied, saying: “I just want to say thank you Mick, thank you, for going out and making your own TikTok and just everything you guys did, the band, retweeting it and everything.
“It’s amazing that you would just go out and take the time to do that, you know what I mean, like I said, I feel blessed and I appreciate you, it’s just awesome.”
How did Ocean Spray get involved?
Ocean Spray, the company behind the cranberry juice that Apodaca was drinking in the TikTok, also got involved.
On Tuesday 6 October, Apodaca was gifted a brand new, cranberry red coloured pick up truck, as well as a hefty supply of cranberry juice.
Ocean Spray Chief Executive Tom Hayes said: “When we saw Nathan Apodaca’s video and the joy it created, we knew we needed to celebrate him and the happiness he spurred.
“Ocean Spray was humbled to gift Nathan with something of importance to him - a truck we knew he needed.”
It was only because Apodaca’s previous truck had broken down that he recorded the viral TikTok clip in the first place. It broke down on his way to work, but luckily he had his longboard, and cranberry juice, with him, and decided to skate the rest of the way.
Apodaca said in a statement: “I was given an awesome surprise yesterday - a brand new set of wheels from Ocean Spray!
“It’s been a wild ride for sure, and I feel humbled to be putting out these good vibes for everyone right now.”
