Judith Owen plays The Caves

ACCLAIMED pianist, singer-songwriter and storyteller Judith Owen tours to The Caves this Sunday to promote her latest album, Somebody's Child.

Known for her love of musical variety and ‘melding it into a great stylistic gumbo all her own’, Somebody’s Child is the culmination of voice, piano and songs that are vignettes of life.

If her 2014 release Ebb & Flow was a personal love letter to Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills, Somebody’s Child takes a leap from the confessional to the observational, whilst recruiting the same crème de la crème of Los Angeles session musicians, bassist Leland Sklar, guitarist Waddy Wachtel and drummer Russell Kunkel.

They are joined by British-based musicians Pedro Segundo and Gabriella Swallow.

“By nature, I am a diverse musician. It’s who I am because of all the music I grew up being exposed to, from opera to Sinatra, Joni to Stevie Wonder, and everything in between,” explains Owen.

“It’s a very British thing where you love mixing all those styles. It’s classical. It’s pop. There’s jazz. There’s rhythm and blues. Then there’s rock thrown in there too.”

Legendary bassist Sklar, Segundo and cellist Swallow will join Owen on stage at The Caves for what she describes as ‘an evening of grown-up pop, jazz and humour’.

Support on the night comes from acclaimed Americana duo Balsamo Deighton, featuring Steve Balsamo and Rosalie Deighton, whose debut album Unfolding was described by Maverick magazine as ‘the very essence of love and loss.’

Owen herself, has been overwhelmingly praised for her timeless music with Jamie Cullum, Bob Harris and the late Sir Terry Wogan, championing her on their radio shows.

All three hosted sessions featuring the Welsh-born songstress while her live performances have included tours with Bryan Ferry and Madeleine Peyroux.
