ONE of Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular shows, The Gondoliers, comes to the King's Theatre next week courtesy of Edinburgh's Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

A romantic comedy set in Venice and the imaginary Spanish kingdom of Barataria, The Gondoliers features opulent costumes, energetic dance routines, a beautiful wedding and more than a splash of humour.

Two cheeky Venetian gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, find themselves thrust into another world when they discover one is actually heir to the throne of Barataria.

The problem is, no one can figure out which man is the right one.

Casilda, the beautiful daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro, has been promised to the King but all is not as it seems..

After much confusion, a series of delightful twists and turns plays out to an exhilarating conclusion.

Artistic director, Alan Borthwick, says, “It’s been a real pleasure escaping from the miserable winter weather in Edinburgh to work with so many talented individuals on The Gondoliers, Gilbert and Sullivan’s sunniest opera.

The Edinburgh Gilbert & Sullivan Society was formed more than 90 years ago to perform and appreciate the works of Gilbert & Sullivan,

introducing a new generation to the joys of G&S.

The Gondoliers will feature a cast of over 50 local amateur performers, accompanied by a full orchestra and under the direction of Alan Borthwick and David Lyle.
