Watch: Cabaret performer's music video shot on empty streets of 'Fringe-less' Edinburgh

A Fringe cabaret performer has created a dark new music song and video inspired by the deserted streets of Edinburgh this month.

Laurie Black made her new music video Dark Days on the empty streets of 'Fringe-less' Edinburgh.

Laurie Black is seen wandering around some of the city’s best-known festival venues, attractions, landmarks and thoroughfares.

Her song, Dark Days, is said to be inspired by how “Fringe-less” the city is this month, with all live events banned under Scotland’s current lockdown restrictions and all performers forced to stage shows online.

Edinburgh-based Black said the “melancholy but joyful” song was aimed at pointing out the quirks of the Fringe, as well as highlighting the many venues, performers and companies that are struggling as a result of the Fringe shutdown.

She said: “After a walk around empty Edinburgh one night in July, I started working on some new music and this whole song just fell out of my brain.

"I knew my performer friends overseas would be curious to see what it looks like to be Fringe-less for the first time in 73 years and decided that making a fun little video on my phone would be of interest to some people.

“Then I remembered the audiences that might quite like it too and it grew into something bigger. It’s a historic event for Edinburgh to be so quiet in August and I felt it needed documenting - I feel as though I’m the reporter on the ground here. It was also something to do while I was unemployed and gig-less.

“I think people are more likely to empathise when they can see the repercussions of what is going on in the world right now from this video.”
