However, with the iconic figure of Scottish history passing away back in 1305, the Dungeons are searching for the next best thing – a William Wallace wannabe who carries the essence of a true Scot.

Whether it is donning the blue and white face paint, growing out that beard and hair to look like the man himself or even getting out your knobbly knees while you dance the Highland fling in all your tartan kilted glory, the Edinburgh Dungeon wants to see images from the nation that embody the spirit of William Wallace or the Scottish heritage.

The competition will run from April 28 until the May 7, with the brave hearted contenders, whatever their gender, being encouraged to submit an image via the website, alongside a comment on what makes them a true Scot.

The entries will then be shortlisted before the potential saviours of Scotland are put to the public vote on May 10. Voting will run for one week until the May 16 before the winner is announced.

Yet, whilst this winning William, or Wilhelmina, won’t win Scottish independence for their troubles, they will be invited to Edinburgh and rewarded with two tickets to the Dungeons and its famous Walking Tour, an overnight stay for two at the four-star Apex Grassmarket Hotel with breakfast included, and an evening meal for two at Hard Rock Café Edinburgh.

Kathryn Angel, general manager of the Edinburgh Dungeons said: “We can’t wait to welcome guests back underground to our infamous Dungeons. The past twelve months have been tough for everyone, and we know that the one person from Scottish history to lead us out from Covid restrictions and towards freedom is the iconic William Wallace.

“So, we want to see which of our bravest Scots resembles our freedom fighter’s character the most. Let the battle commence!”

Edinburgh Dungeons are set to reopen on May 1, where visitors can live and breathe the darkest history Edinburgh has to offer.
