The new adaptions of the famous Edinburgh-set story will hit the stage 60 years after the first ever stage production
A brand new adaptation of one of Edinburgh’s most famous fictional stories is set to hit the stage next month.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie will be staged at the Capital’s Royal Lyceum Theatre from Friday, October 2 until Sunday, October 18.
The National Theatre of Scotland production, which is associated with Pitlochry Festival Theatre, is based on the legendary 1961 novel from Edinburgh-born author Muriel Spark and features Scottish actress Gayle Rankin in the title role.

Rankin is known to audiences for her roles in films such as The Greatest Showman and for her performances on the small screen, including as Alys Rivers in the Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon.
She previously played one of Miss Jean Brodie’s schoolgirls in a 2003 production of the story at the Lyceum, returning 23 years later to take on the title role.
The upcoming production, which has been adapted by acclaimed Scottish playwright David Harrower, will mark 60 years from the premiere of the original stage version of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
The story follows Jean Brodie, a teacher at an all-girls school in Edinburgh who has a powerful influence over a group of young students, leading to serious consequences.
Vicky Featherstone said: “As we hurtle towards the first day of rehearsal for The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, I am so excited to be working with this incredible group of actors and creatives, led by Gayle Rankin, and with a spicy new version by David Harrower which seeks to honour everything that Spark gave us while creating something which feels urgent, surprising and fresh.
“We are all looking forward to bringing all the thrilling complexity that is Brodie to life once again for Scottish audiences.”
After the run in Edinburgh, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie will tour Scotland, visiting Citizens Theatre in Glasgow from October 21 until October 24, His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen from October 29 until October 31, and finishing its run at Pitlochry Festival Theatre from November 4 until November 7.
