Further hire points will be added across Edinburgh in a rolling programme up to and after launch when an initial 200 bikes will be available.

University of Edinburgh’s Bristo Square, Waverley Bridge, Fountainbridge, Stockbridge and Charlotte Square are some of the areas riders will be able to access the new bikes.

Access points will continue to grow through the autumn as the number of bikes is increased to provide an ever-expanding network of origins and destinations that can be found on the scheme app and website.

As the scheme grows, operator Serco will continue to consult on locations and is encouraging customers to suggest new and additional locations where they would like to see the scheme reach out to.

Dubbed Just Eat Cycles, after the bike’s new takeaway delivery sponsor, bosses say the pricing structure will allow users to make single journeys from as little as £1.50.

Users will be able to hire bikes through an annual membership, on a daily basis, or for shorter periods using a simple smartphone app.

Serco’s director of leisure services Jason Holtom, said: “It’s fantastic to see the first hire points being installed across the city centre and at locations around the University of Edinburgh. Our aim is to make the Edinburgh cycle hire scheme accessible to everyone, meaning we’re introducing an easy to use app and bikes which are not only high quality, but easy and fun to ride.”

One of the new scheme’s key features will be an innovative hybrid lock – the first of its kind in the UK.

This allows for accessing bikes at physical hire points as well as secure designated ‘virtual’ cycle hire points that will be clearly marked on the ground and on the website and app.

Bikes can be hired and returned to any of these cycle hire points at any time, with the closest available hire points shown in the app.
