Based on the hit Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a world in which some people can telekinetically manipulate one of the four elements—water, earth, fire or air—through practices known as "bending", inspired by Chinese martial arts.

The only individual who can bend all four elements, the "Avatar", is responsible for maintaining harmony among the world’s four nations, and serves as the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world.

Casting for Netflix’s live adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was announced in two phases; the first announcement introduced who would play the leads in the series, while the second recent announcement introduced the remainder of the cast.

In the first announcement, Netflix revealed that child actor Gordon Cormier would take on the lead role of Aang; the last surviving airbender and the hero of the story. He is an incarnation of the "Avatar", the spirit of light and peace manifested in human form.

As the Avatar, Aang controls all four elements (water, earth, fire, and air) and is tasked with bringing balance and keeping the Four Nations at peace.

Cormier’s casting was announced alongside the roles of Katara and Sokka, Aang’s best friends. Canadian and Mohawk actress Kiawentiio will be playing Katara, a water bending Avatar and Ian Ousley as Sokka; a Water Tribe warrior of the Southern Water Tribe and the son of Chief Hakoda and Kya.

They will be joined by a 20 plus strong cast which includes recent announcements George Takei (of Star Trek: The Original Series fame), Amber Midthunder, who was recently the lead role in Disney+’s action film Prey and Danny Pudi - who superfans will know as Abed from Community.
