Potential Scottish Locations

As confirmed by security guards on site earlier this week, Netflix began filming the romantic sequel near Dalkeith in Midlothian on Monday with locals witnessing the Newbattle Abbey College transformed into a winter wonderland with fake snow, a nativity scene and fir trees.

We can expect to see the former monastery turned educational institution standing in as Montenaro Castle in the movie.

However, where else in Scotland can we expect the royal festive film to be shot at?

There is a chance Hopetoun House in South Queensferry, which was in the previous movie, will feature in the regal romance with some reports claiming that filming has already begun at the east of Scotland location.

Film crew for the second movie also took full advantage of the festive decorations in place in Edinburgh last year, including the famously well-decorated Dome on George Street. Parliament Square also featured previously and cafe scenes in Mimi's in Leith so we could see these locations return to our screens in the third volume of the movie franchise.

Edinburgh Gateway train station was transformed into an airport in the second film ‘Princess Switch: Switched Again’ so we may see a romantic airport scene feature in the upcoming movie.

Borthwick Castle, 12 miles away from Edinburgh in Gorebridge, has also been circulating in the rumour mill as a possible location.

To the west, Glasgow Cathedral is a potential option as Netflix film crew previously shot here for the second instalment.

Who’s playing who? And will there be a Scottish twist?

So far, only Vanessa Hugdens has been confirmed as a definite cast member by sources, however, we'll likely see Nick Sagar return as Kevin, Sam Palladio as Prince Edward, and Alexa Adeosun as Olivia.

With Mark Fleischmann and Suanne Braun both returning for the second Princess Switch, as Frank De Luca and Mrs Donatelli, they'll likely also come back for a third movie.

As for Hudgens playing another character, she told TheWrap if she did they would probably be Scottish as she loves the accent but it’s not likely she will.

She said: "No, no, that's just too outrageous. We're already at max outrageous here with three characters, we're just going to keep it at that."

She added: "And I would 100% lose my mind if I tried to add another me, even though it would probably be Scottish [and] I love that accent and it would be a great excuse to master the Scottish accent. But no, that's not happening."

Release date

This is currently up in the air at the moment given the current restrictions and other pandemic permitting delays, however, according to ET, the third Princess Switch is set to debut on Netflix around Christmas 2021.

If delays hit, the movie would likely be pushed back a full year as, due to it’s ‘Christmas movie’ theme, it’s hard to imagine it being released at any other time.

A trailer or name has not yet surfaced for the new movie but both The Princess Switch and The Princess Switch: Switched Again are both available to re-watch on Netflix.
