Pupils set to wow audiences with all-kids production of Matilda the Musical Jr
Pupils at an Edinburgh school are set to embrace their mischievous sides as they take to the stage with their production of Matilda the Musical Jr.
Edinburgh Steiner School pupils, all aged between eight and 17, will perform the Broadway Junior adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s book which tells the story of five-year-old Matilda Wormwood, a gifted child who is driven to play pranks on her neglectful and abusive parents.
She is later enrolled at Crunchem Hall, where children are despised and unfairly punished by the tyrannical headteacher Miss Trunchbull who takes an instant dislike to Matilda. But after discovering she has secret powers, Matilda realises she has everything she needs to put the cruel headmistress in her place.

The 1988 novel was turned into a Tony Award-winning musical by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, which premiered in Stratford-Upon-Avon in 2010, and features popular hits such as ‘Naughty’, ‘Miracle’ and ‘When I Grow Up’.
The musical will be performed by 29 pupils from across the school, with a strict ban on any adults in the cast.
The role of Matilda will be played by 12-year-old Martha Jebson Moore, with Emma Miller set to play her understudy. Otherwise, Emma will play Matilda’s best friend Lavender, who she meets on her first day at school.
The school’s production of the musical will run over three days from January 29 at the Spylaw Road school, with all ages welcome. Doors will open at 7pm on both January 29 and 30, with the show set to start at 7.30pm. Doors for Saturday’s matinee performance will open at 2pm for a 2.30pm start time. Running time for each of the showings is one hour with a 15 minute interval.
