The Producers comes to the Church Hill Theatre

EMT, as they are better known, have opted for an old favourite to showcase the talents of their 2016 cast, Mel Brooks’ outrageously hilarious The Producers.

Based the 1968 film of the same name, The Producers charts the adventures of crafty theatre impresario Max Bialystock. Down on his luck, he hires mild-mannered account Leo Bloom and together they scheme to bring the worst show - Springtime For Hitler - they can to Broadway and pocket $2million for themselves in the process.

Hazel Beattie, EMT chairperson, says, “I am delighted EMT is bringing this hilarious production to the stage. All the cast and production team have been working hard, and laughing hard, each week at rehearsals.

“We have such a talented and dedicated group of performers that this is sure to be another huge success and not to be missed.”

The musical certainly has the pedigree to be just that, it’s one of the most celebrated musicals of all time, picking up 12 Tony Awards, the most ever given to a musical, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical in 2002.

Exactly two decades earlier, EMT was formed, with the aim of producing large-scale amateur musicals in major theatres.

Past shows have included Chess, Boogie Nights and Sweeney Todd.

The Producers’ cast have been in rehearsals since October last year, working in their spare time to pull together the all-singing, all-dancing spectacular; for six months the show girls have been fluffing their feathers, the accounts counting their cash and now they are ready to meet their audiences.

Joel Mason, director, says, “In 40 years of theatre I have seldom worked with a group, professional or otherwise, that has as much heart as this company.”
