He said: “The turnout this year was great, I think we had about 10,000 people attend.

“The gala day has something for everyone’s tastes, and it’s often an event people use to catch up with people they haven’t seen in years.

“There’s a real sense of community spirit.”

The traditional gala day pageant features groups from the local community, who aim to make the Links a “bright, colourful and not forgetting noisy big day out”.

Councillor Munro added: “People come back year after year due to the range of shows and music entertainment that’s on offer.

“The home baking stall outside South Leith Parish Church is also legendary.”

The festival began at 10.30am and finished at 4.30pm.

Councillor Chas Booth who was among the crowds added: “It was a great atmosphere. It’s lovely to see everyone having a great time and getting involved in lots of conversation.”
