To find out where coffee lovers are paying the highest prices, Contact Coffee Co analysed the cost of five popular coffees, latte, cappuccino, americano, mocha and flat white, from the highest-rated cafés on Deliveroo across major UK cities. The average price of each drink was calculated for every café before an overall average coffee price was worked out for each city.

The study found that Edinburgh ranks 32nd in the UK for the cost of a takeaway coffee, with an average price of £4.34. While the Scottish capital does not feature among the country's most expensive coffee cities, it still sits above several major UK locations when it comes to the price of a daily brew.

Edinburgh's average coffee price is higher than Liverpool (£4.28), Milton Keynes (£4.28), Birmingham (£4.23), Sheffield (£4.23) and Nottingham (£4.23). It also means coffee lovers in the city are paying almost 50p more per cup than those in Bath, which has the lowest average coffee price in the study at £3.85.

At the top of the rankings, Chester takes the title of the UK's most expensive coffee city with an average price of £4.82, followed closely by London (£4.80) and Salford (£4.75). Other cities including Manchester (£4.61), Bradford (£4.60) and Leeds (£4.60) also rank among the UK's priciest locations for a takeaway coffee.

Despite sitting outside the top 10, Edinburgh's coffee prices remain competitive with many other UK cities, showing that expensive coffee is not only a feature of England's biggest urban areas. The research highlights how much the cost of a simple coffee run can vary depending on where you live, with differences adding up for those who buy a brew regularly.

The UK's most expensive cities for a takeaway coffee are:

  1. Chester - £4.82

  2. London - £4.80

  3. Salford - £4.75

  4. Manchester - £4.61
