Ms Jardine said the move would ensure young Ukrainians living in Scotland have the same opportunity to preserve their heritage and gain formal recognition for their skills as pupils elsewhere in the UK and allow Scots to learn the language.

The proposal follows the UK Department for Education’s announcement of a new Ukrainian GCSE exam package. No equivalent National 5 or Higher qualification currently exists north of the border.

Ms Jardine said: “Scotland has warmly welcomed thousands of Ukrainian families fleeing conflict, but preserving their native language and heritage is vital, particularly for young Ukrainians.

“Scots also deserve the same opportunity as those elsewhere in the UK to learn the language of our Ukrainian friends.

“Offering Ukrainian in our schools would build bridges of understanding, enrich our classrooms, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between our two nations.”
