The city has been the setting for famous TV cops and a Hollywood love story, whilst some of the cities historical buildings have played the perfect location for interior shots of mystery thrillers and a certain superhero blockbuster. 5. Cloud Atlas, 2012
This fantasy film sees six interconnected nested stories blend together to tell a truly remarkable story. The epic spans over five centuries and features a couple of Edinburgh landmarks throughout. Scenes starring Ben Whishaw and James D’Arcy were filmed in the capital, including a shot on the Scott Monument. 6. Rebus, 2000
It should come as no surprise, but local detective show Rebus was shot on location in the city. The brainchild of Edinburgh novelist Ian Rankin, saw his creation brought to life by Ken Stott. 7. Looking After JoJo, 1998
Starring Scots acting royalty in Robert Carlyle and Kevin McKidd, the ‘90s TV series followed the criminal escapades of the titular thief. The show was set primarily in Sighthill and Niddrie, but also features the city’s bus station and Caledonian Hotel. Photo: Shutterstock
8. Avengers: Infinity War, 2018
The capital gets a place in the fifth highest grossing film ever made, after making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. In 2017, large areas of the city centre were closed off for filming of the Marvel blockbuster.
