Edinburgh’s rich history with literature is well-documented and the city’s love affair with all things books is obvious when you take a look at some of the fantastic bookshops at our front door.
The capital boasts huge sprawling stores, intimate and cosy snugs, and vintage-laden antiquated shelves meaning that there is something for every kind of reader in the city.
Thursday, March 5 marks the annual World Book Day, when readers across the world will be celebrating their favourite characters, authors, and bookshops.
We asked our readers which bookshops are their favourites for World Book Day 2026 - here’s what they had to say.

1. Topping & Company Booksellers - Blenheim Place
Topping & Company has been at home at the top of Leith Walk for the past seven years and has delighted readers across the city with its packed store, which sprawls over two floors. The store often hosts chats and events featuring prominent authors, with the store becoming somewhat of a pilgrimage for readers in Edinburgh. Topping & Company is open seven days per week 9am-9pm. | Google Maps

2. Lighthouse Bookshop - West Nicolson Street
Lighthouse Bookshop on West Nicolson Street describes itself as "Edinburgh's radical bookshop", stacking titles from feminist, LGBTQ+ and intersectional authors among many others. The store is open seven days a week - Monday to Saturday 10am-8pm and 11.30pm-5pm on Sundays - and stocks books for both adults and children. | Google Maps Photo: Google Maps

Waterstones on Princes Street is a favourite not only for its wide selection of books on offer but also for its sprawling views of Edinburgh Castle. Book lovers can pick up a new title then head to the in-store cafe for an aesthetically-pleasing reading session with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The store is open 9am-7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am-7pm on Sundays. | Google Maps
