Remote working should still remain the default position for those who can, but non-essential, indoor, non-office based workplaces will be allowed to resume, with physical distancing measures in place.

Industrial

Edinburgh’s factories, warehouses, and breweries could open fully, with lab and research facilities - like those at the University of Edinburgh - restarting work too.

Retail

Small retail units will be allowed to reopen with physical distancing in place, along with outdoor markets.

Edinburgh has several popular outdoor markets, including those in Stockbridge and in the Grassmarket.

Shops on the High Street and Princes Street could also reopen, provided that physical distancing rules could be followed.

Food and drink

If the country enters phase two one time, pubs and restaurants will be able to open outdoor spaces with physical distancing and increased hygiene routines.

Pubs like The Peartree, and the Sheeps Heid Inn, which both have outdoor areas will benefit from this rule.

Sport and culture

Playgrounds and sports courts can reopen with physical distancing, along with a resumption of professional sport in line with public health advice.

Ceremonies

Registration offices will open for high priority tasks and places of worship will be able to open for private prayer, with physical distancing and hygiene safeguards.

Marriages, civil partnerships and other types of ceremonies will also be allowed to take place with a limited number of attendees.

When will the next lockdown review be?

The Scottish government will continue to hold a review of current restrictions every three weeks as a minimum, meaning the next review is expected to take place on 18 June.

Any changes could then come into force “within days” of this date, providing the country continues to make progress in its handling of the virus outbreak.

As such, a further easing of restrictions could begin from mid-June.

Speaking at her daily press conference on 8 June, Nicola Sturgeon said Scotland could move into phase two of lockdown on 18 June.
