An application to open a nail and beauty salon in a pharmacy in Penicuik town centre led to calls for additional information about ventilation by officers. In a report to Midlothian Council’s planners, they said: “Environmental health has received a number of complaints about odour from nail bar premises.

“The solvents and adhesives used in these premises cause detectable odours at very low concentrations.”

They urged planners to add conditions to any permission for a ventilation system in the salon to be approved by the director of planning before the salon could go ahead.

Planners granted permission for a change of use for the premises on John Street from a pharmacy to a nail and beauty salon after the applicant sent them details of the system they planned to install.

This includes a condition that the approved equipment “shall be installed so that this exhausts to a height that ensures that no odours escape or are exhausted to any neighbouring properties”.
