The move follows an outbreak of the highly infectious disease in the Capital which began earlier this month and has so far seen 16 cases confirmed.

The letter from NHS Lothian warns: “Nine out of ten susceptible people coming into contact with a measles patient will develop measles.

“In order to prevent transmission to high risk and vulnerable patients, it is essential that all staff working with patients are fully immunised with two documented doses of a measles-containing vaccine (MMR) or have positive antibody tests for measles.”

It adds that open clinics are planned at various NHS Lothian sites for antibody testing for staff members who could not provide evidence of immunity.

“Healthcare workers with a negative antibody test will be expected to receive two doses of MMR except where this is contradicted.”

A health board spokeswoman said the vaccination plans were standard practice.
